The Definitions of Certificate

Certificate is a document serving as evidence or as written testimony, as of status, qualifications, privileges, or the truth of something. Certificate is also a document attesting to the fact that a person has completed and educational course, issued either by an institution not authorized to grant diplomas, or to a student not qualifying for a diploma.


The Differences Between a Diploma, Degree and Certificate

In general, certificate and diploma programs take less time to complete than a degree and are more focused on a specific skill, so student can get a job as soon as they completed the programs. In addition, certificate, diploma, and degree programs are differing in the amount of time they take to complete the course, the institutions that offer them, and the fields of study they focus on.


Certificate Programs

Vocational and technical certificates programs are focused on a particular skills and are typically delivered at community colleges or technical and vocational schools. These certificate programs typically will take about a year to complete, but could take as little as a few months. Certificate programs are available in areas such as cosmetology, ventilation, refrigeration technology (HVAC), and more. Other examples include certificates for medical receptionist and small engine repair. Generally, certificate program allows students to complete their education more quickly to be able to enter the workforce.


Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates

Most universities and colleges offer undergraduate or graduate certificates that can be obtained in combination with a Bachelor and Master’s degree program. Undergraduate or graduate certifications allow students to focus on a specific area of their degree field and can help to show future employers that an applicant has specialized knowledge. Both undergraduate and graduate certificates are available in different fields, from business to information technology.


Diploma Certificates

A diploma takes about a year or two to complete. It is similar to technical or vocational certificates, diploma focus on a specific skill or field, without the general education coursework required by a degree. Certificate and diploma programs are also offered in the same areas. Diploma are typically a little more intensive and detailed than certificate programs and may take longer to complete. Examples of diploma programs are including areas like healthcare, welding, electrical, and more.


Degree Certificates

Degree programs can be completed at various levels such as associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate. In order to complete these course, it will take two years for an associate’s degree, four years for a bachelor’s degree, two additional years for a master’s degree, or more than four years for a doctorate. These degrees are offered at universities and colleges. Even though students receive degrees in certain fields of study, they are usually required to take general education courses in various subjects in order to obtain a well-rounded education. Many professional areas, required at least a bachelor’s degree, but some may require higher degrees.
